Dr. Shane Bateman, DVM
Bio:
Dr. Shane Bateman is an Associate Professor at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, and a board-certified specialist in veterinary emergency and critical care. He has over two decades of experience in clinical practice, education, and research, with a focus on advancing critical care techniques and improving patient outcomes at both Ohio State University (1998-2008) and University of Guelph (2009-present). His research on fluid therapy in cats has led to significant advancements and collaborations, while his leadership within the OVC Health Sciences Centre supports excellence in critical care training. Beyond academia, he is deeply engaged in community initiatives, earning recognition for his efforts to improve access to veterinary care and promote animal welfare.
Synopsis:
Triaging Respiratory Emergencies” equips veterinarians with essential skills to rapidly identify and manage life-threatening respiratory conditions in small animal patients. This lecture highlights a systematic approach to recognizing clinical patterns, prioritizing interventions, and stabilizing patients with conditions like airway obstruction, pleural space disease, and pulmonary parenchymal disorders. Attendees will also explore practical oxygen support strategies, including the use of high-flow nasal cannula systems, to optimize oxygen delivery and enhance patient outcomes. This session provides actionable insights to improve confidence and efficiency in managing critical respiratory emergencies.
